From a climatological perspective, it's the warmest time of the year for many parts of the nation.
High levels of low-level moisture are combining with hot temperatures to produce heat index levels in the mid 90's to over 100 degrees today.
It's looking like there will be a change in the jet stream alignment about a week from now. This will push the ridge of high pressure west with a digging trough of low pressure over the eastern U.S.
This could result in cooler weather over the Central U.S. heading towards the middle of the month. While some areas will find more moderate readings, hotter weather is likely to shift to the western quarter of the U.S.
